against the backdrop of the functional crisis affecting many hospitals built in the 1960s and 70s, this bachelor thesis pursues a development of the existing kantonsspital baden rather than a radical demolition. the originally planned complete new build is called into question — in favour of a strategy that does not smooth over ruptures, transitions, and frictions, but makes them productive.

new volumes enter into dialogue with the existing structure: deliberately heterogeneous in scale, attitude, and typology. taller bodies, smaller additions, and connecting in-between spaces all find their place within an ensemble that does not deny difference but understands it as a quality.

what emerges is a spatial collage that does not aim for formal unity but for a many-voiced density. the site becomes an open system in which history remains visible and continues to be written.
